Unmetered Dedicated Servers in 2026: 1Gbps vs 10Gbps, Pricing and Fair Use
Choosing an unmetered dedicated server can significantly affect hosting costs and performance for websites, applications, and services that transfer large amounts of data. In 2026, businesses must look beyond claims like “unlimited bandwidth” and compare network port speed, guaranteed throughput, fair-use terms, and hardware capacity. This guide explains the differences between 1Gbps and 10Gbps dedicated servers, how much data each can theoretically transfer, how pricing works and how to measure your real requirements.
What Is an Unmetered Dedicated Server?
An unmetered dedicated server is a physical machine allocated to one customer, with a network plan that generally doesn’t charge traffic by the gigabyte or terabyte. You get dedicated CPU, physical RAM, storage, and operating-system configuration. Unmetered does not mean infinite speed or unrestricted usage. The server remains subject to the contracted port rate, available network capacity and service terms. Explore DigitalBerg dedicated server hosting for physical server options.
Unmetered vs Unlimited vs Metered Bandwidth
Unmetered bandwidth generally means there is no conventional per-GB transfer charge, although port speed and contractual conditions still apply. Unlimited bandwidth is a marketing term that must be checked against the actual contract; it does not provide infinite capacity. Metered bandwidth includes a transfer allowance, such as 20TB monthly, after which overage charges or restrictions may apply. Confirm whether inbound and outbound traffic are counted separately, whether sustained utilisation is permitted and whether throttling applies.
1Gbps vs 10Gbps Unmetered Dedicated Servers
A 1Gbps port has a nominal capacity of one billion bits per second; a 10Gbps port offers ten times that nominal rate. These are interface speeds, not guaranteed end-to-end internet performance.
| Specification | 1Gbps server | 10Gbps server |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal rate | 1,000 Mbps | 10,000 Mbps |
| Theoretical data per second | 125 MB | 1,250 MB |
| Theoretical data per hour | 450 GB | 4.5 TB |
| Theoretical data per day | 10.8 TB | 108 TB |
| Theoretical data over 30 days | 324 TB | 3,240 TB |
| Typical use | Websites, APIs, backups, games | Large file distribution, high-throughput services |
These figures are theoretical decimal calculations for uninterrupted, full-rate, one-directional traffic. Protocol overhead, congestion, contention and contract limitations reduce real throughput.
How to calculate monthly transfer
Eight bits equal one byte. For 1Gbps: 1,000,000,000 ÷ 8 = 125,000,000 bytes per second, or 125MB/s. Over 30 days: 125 × 60 × 60 × 24 × 30 = 324,000,000MB, approximately 324TB. At 10Gbps, the theoretical figure is 3.24PB per 30 days. Neither value is a promised transfer allowance.
Does a 10Gbps Port Guarantee 10Gbps Internet Speed?
No. A physical 10Gbps interface can be connected to a network service with a lower guaranteed or committed rate. Performance also depends on routing, congestion, CPU, storage, packet processing and the destination network. Ask whether the advertised rate is for public internet traffic or private networking, whether upstream bandwidth is shared, and whether 10Gbps is guaranteed or available only as a burst.
When to Choose a 1Gbps Unmetered Dedicated Server
A 1Gbps server can be a sensible choice for high-traffic websites, ecommerce systems, APIs, application backends, scheduled backups, game servers and file distribution when measured peak demand fits comfortably within the connection. For gaming, latency and packet loss can matter more than raw port speed. Businesses with consistent transfer volumes often value predictable network costs more than an oversized interface.
When Is a 10Gbps Dedicated Server Worth It?
Consider 10Gbps when sustained or peak throughput regularly exceeds 1Gbps’ practical capacity. Large-scale file delivery, high-concurrency streaming, substantial data transfers and enterprise infrastructure may benefit. Streaming requirements depend on bitrate and concurrent users, while data transfer requires capable networks at both ends. Review infrastructure dedicated servers and enterprise dedicated servers, and confirm actual 10Gbps availability and guarantees before ordering.
Unmetered Dedicated Server Pricing in 2026
Pricing depends on the processor generation, core count, RAM, NVMe or SSD capacity, RAID configuration, network commitment, data-centre location, DDoS mitigation, managed support and software licensing. A faster network does not help if CPU or disk I/O is the bottleneck. Compare total monthly cost and contract conditions rather than advertised bandwidth alone.
| Component | What to check |
|---|---|
| CPU | Generation, cores and workload performance |
| RAM | Capacity, speed, ECC support |
| Storage | NVMe/SSD/HDD, redundancy, capacity |
| Network | Port speed, committed rate, fair use |
| Security | Firewall, DDoS protection, monitoring |
| Support | Management scope, response commitments |
For current hardware specifications and pricing, check DigitalBerg dedicated servers and the server ordering catalogue. Availability and bandwidth terms depend on the selected configuration.
Fair Use Policies: Questions to Ask Before Buying
Unmetered plans may still be governed by acceptable-use and network-stability policies. Before purchasing, verify whether there is a fixed monthly transfer allowance; whether sustained full-port use is permitted; whether traffic shaping applies; whether inbound and outbound traffic differ; what DDoS protection is included; whether extra charges apply; and what happens when network usage exceeds a contracted commitment. Obtain the relevant service terms in writing.
Unmetered vs 95th Percentile Bandwidth Billing
Some providers bill using the 95th percentile rather than a fixed unmetered rate. They sample throughput at intervals, commonly five minutes, sort the measurements, discard the top 5%, and bill based on the highest remaining sample. This reduces the impact of brief spikes while still reflecting sustained usage. Providers can calculate inbound and outbound traffic differently, so examine the agreement. For background, see Cloudflare’s bandwidth measurement documentation.
How to Test Dedicated Server Network Performance
Start by checking your Linux interface and negotiated link speed. Replace eth0 with the actual interface name:
sudo ethtool eth0To monitor live inbound and outbound traffic on Ubuntu:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nload
nloadFor a controlled network benchmark, install iPerf3 on servers you own or are authorised to test:
sudo apt install iperf3
# On your test endpoint:
iperf3 -s
# On the server being evaluated:
iperf3 -c TEST_SERVER_IP -P 4 -t 30The test endpoint must have adequate capacity. Monitor several days of actual peak and sustained throughput, packet loss, latency, interface errors and application response times before deciding to upgrade. See the official iPerf3 documentation.
How to Choose the Right Unmetered Dedicated Server
1. Estimate total monthly traffic
Multiply average content size by expected downloads or requests. Delivering a 100MB file to 10,000 users transfers approximately 1TB before overhead and repeat downloads.
2. Measure peak demand
A workload transferring 50TB in a month does not automatically require 10Gbps. Evenly distributed traffic has a relatively modest average rate, but simultaneous downloads can create large peaks.
3. Check CPU, RAM and storage bottlenecks
Database-heavy applications may benefit more from memory or NVMe upgrades than from faster network speeds. Select hardware according to measured workload behaviour.
4. Check security, location and support
Review firewall controls, backups, DDoS mitigation, management responsibilities and data-centre location. Explore DigitalBerg data-centre information.
