Secure an Ubuntu Dedicated Server for AI Agents: SSH, Firewall and Updates
This practical DigitalBerg tutorial is part of our dedicated-server AI operations series. It builds on our OpenClaw and AI software installation guide and our Claude and OpenAI agent setup guide. The Jupiter dedicated server is the reference environment; verify your actual OS, access rights and application versions before applying commands.
In this guide: SSH hardening, UFW, updates and private AI dashboards. The examples are instructional, not claimed live benchmarks or verified deployment screenshots.
Prepare a recovery path
Before touching SSH, confirm out-of-band recovery or console access and take a configuration backup. Create a named sudo account and install its public key. Verify that a second SSH session works before disabling passwords.
Install updates and essentials
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo apt install -y ufw fail2ban unattended-upgrades curl git
sudo systemctl enable --now fail2ban
sudo systemctl status fail2ban --no-pager
Check whether a reboot is needed and schedule downtime rather than unexpectedly restarting workloads.
Restrict inbound traffic
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow from YOUR_ADMIN_IP to any port 22 proto tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status numbered
Replace the placeholder with the administrator’s actual public IP. Confirm IPv6 rules, provider firewall and SSH access before enabling UFW.
Protect AI gateways
Keep OpenClaw and API dashboards on 127.0.0.1 or a trusted VPN. Use SSH tunnels rather than opening ports 18789 or 3001 publicly. Run agents under unprivileged service accounts and separate their data directories.
Validate and maintain
Check ss -lntp, systemctl --failed, journalctl -p warning -b and disk free space. Schedule patch reviews and verify that your backups restore. A firewall does not replace application authentication.
Pre-publication and production checklist
- Verify commands and current upstream documentation on a non-production system.
- Never include real API keys, customer data or private host identifiers in examples.
- Document rollback and recovery before changing a live service.
- Compare current provider pricing, policies and compatibility with your requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Does this require a GPU?
Not for hosted-model API gateway and agent workloads. Local inference has different hardware requirements.
Can this be used on a production server?
Only after environment-specific testing, security review and an approved rollback plan.
